VN of the Month January 2006 - I/O

The VN of the Month is  I/O, but that's a great start of the year. I also consider Fragments Blue a masterpiece. For some reason I chose Horizont for review among games without English review.

1. Fragments Blue [060119] Vridge Inc. 1 2 This novel-type adventure begins when the main character Kaname Ousaka takes delivery of a letter and a key. In search of the letter's source, he heads back to his home town of Shimizu and learns of a quest to collect a set of such keys in order to open a box that will lead to happiness. The game includes love elements and interactive conversation sequences. The story is funny with laughter and suspense, produced good aftertaste. Heroines are bright and lovely. The mystery remains till the end, but after first good end there's no more incentive in playing. The story feels too short.

2. Gore Screaming Show ゴア・スクリーミング・ショウ [060120] Black Cyc 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10  Gore Screaming Show begins with the return of Kyouji Jinno, a relatively unassuming yet personable student, to the remote suburban community of his early childhood. With his parents still employed overseas, Kyouji takes up residence with his aunt, a cheerful woman with an unusual passion for occult research and relatively carefree regard to responsibilities. In this eased environment, Kyouji finds many opportunities to pursue leisure activities, rekindling friendship with several girls he once knew, now having matured into beautiful women. Soon thereafter, Kyouji accepts a request from his aunt to help unravel mysteries concerning paranormal phenomena she is investigating. They immediately set off, accompanied by friends in tow, to an ominous undeveloped forest that boarders the town. After discussing details of an obscure local myth, the group splits to cover more ground, whereupon Kyouji stumbles across a decayed well. Suddenly an adolescent girl appears, candidly forthcoming and friendly in disposition towards Kyouji, but holding venomous hatred for his female companion. When the encounter is suddenly cut short, the nameless child inexplicably vanishes without a trace. The forest expedition is then repeated a second time, further arousing the attentions of the mysterious young girl: an interest that inaugurates events of chaotic death and destruction in its wake... all committed in the pursuit of happiness once denied. 3. Houou Senki Maimu 鳳凰戦姫 舞夢 [060120] LiLiM "It's the usual way home from the club after school, but something was not right... Kenta tried to shake that feeling off his chest and hurried home. All of the sudden, the bright moonlight faded and Kenta looked up just to see a figure of a person floating in the air. The figure became bigger and bigger... then he realized that it was falling toward him! Not only that but it was a girl in torn up kimono! Kenta rescued the falling person in time and discovered that her face was covered with a Prajna mask. 'My name is Maimu...' 'You are the chosen person... the person that will fight along with me...' Then a man and a woman wearing a black kimono appeared and began attack them! Suddenly, the Prajna mask and Kenta's body glowed before the mask split. Then his body was absorbed into the 'Homura armor' that is being armed to Maimu who stood up and now radiated dazzling light. 'The evil doers are purged as Bird of Flame rises. The warrior of love and courage, Houou Senki☆Maimu has arrived!' Maimu is actually a princess warrior who came to prevent Heike army from conquering the Earth. The story about a protagonist and a heroine that came from a faraway world in order to stop the world invasion has begun." It's quite a traditional action story with battles and thus lots of H development on defeat involved. It's a serious story, but there are also numerous bakage gags scattered around. The jokes are specific, oriented on 2chan users and the like, but overall conversation is boring.

4. Ar Tonelico ~Sekai no Owari de Utai Tsuzukeru Shoujo~ アルトネリコ世界の終わりで詩い続ける少女 [060126] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Ar tonelico takes place in the region of Sol Ciel, upon a huge tower that rises above a sea of deadly plasma that swallowed the surface world in a disaster centuries past. This is where the series gets its name: Ar tonelico is the name of that tower. As well as humans, the tower is home to a race of human-like artificial beings named Reyvateils, who can communicate with the tower by singing songs to cast magic. The story starts in the city of Platina, during an outbreak of enemy creatures called Viruses. The protagonist, a Knight of Elemia named Lyner Barsett, goes to investigate with fellow knight Ayatane, and the tower administrator, Shurelia. Unfortunately, they rapidly discover that the Viruses are able to turn intangible, rendering normal defeat impossible. Shurelia therefore sends Lyner on a quest for the only thing that can help them: the Hymn Crystal Purger. Taking an airship, he travels down to the Wings of Horus, the floating continent that surrounds the tower. More accurately, he crashes thanks to an attack from a dragon, which complicates matters extremely. In the process of searching for the crystal and a way to repair his airship, he meets and teams up with a number of people, including two Reyvateils. First is the shy Aurica, who healed his injuries after his crash. Second is the more outspoken Misha, actually his forgotten childhood friend. But there's one problem - Misha looks much younger than she should be. Aside from those two are the wanderer Jack, the local church knight Radolf, and the airship grathmelder Krusche. As the story progresses, Lyner and his comrades not only try to find the Hymn Crystal and fix Lyner's airship, but discover the reason for Misha's youthful appearance, and the source of the recent Virus outbreak. 5. Finalist ふぁいなりすと [060126] Princess Soft 1 Finalist's story takes place in a college town somewhere in Japan. The protagonist of the story, Yoshiki Shirasagi, is a male high school student. When he entered high school, he was mistakenly given a room in the girl's dormitory due to his feminine name. This did not bode well with Yoshiki, but he eventually ended up taking the room in the end since there was no more room left in the boy's dormitory. Yoshiki meets many of the girls who live in the same dormitory. Absolutely beaten male in women dormitory setting, but I never expected to see anything worthy from Princess Soft, anyway. All kinds of crazy heroines are gathered there, and protagonist is a donkan, of course. Scenario has no depth at all, your usual moege. Some people call it good moege, but for me moege can't be good by definition of it.

6. I/O [060126] Regista 1 2 3 4 April 26th, 2032 A.D. - Megalopolis Tokyo - 00:12 in the morning A total lunar eclipse occurs for the first time in 3 years. Even though it's supposed to be a simple astronomical phenomenon, it soon sets off a series of unexpected events. Unexplainable mysteries, terrorist incidents, and network crime surge as if in unison. The truth mixes with lies, as if the world is awake but still sleeping. Something has begun. Somewhere no one can see. Something no one knows about. This is a story of the chance meeting and tragic parting of the young men and women living in this world. Players get to play the game from 4 different points of view: Route A - Hinata, a youth who has lost his sister and himself. Route B - Ishtar, a freelance programmer and leader of a hacker team. Route C - Ishtar, but seems a bit different from the Ishtar in Route B.... Route D - He, a man completely shrouded in mystery. And thus.. "The beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning" There are English reviews. I tried to play this game like 8 years ago or so and was absolutely destroyed by untranslated mind screw ans schizophrenic development. I'm over-enjoyed to finally be able to watch an English walkthrough of it.

7. Futari de Hitotsu no Koigokoro ふたりでひとつの恋心 [060127] Giant Panda 1 2 Despite his family’s wealth and prestige, Souchi’s childhood was one of hardship and misery, marred by the travesty of his parent’s failing marriage. In this time of crisis, his only memories of happiness were those spent with a charismatic girl named Chii: a childhood friend who left a lasting impression on his heart and soul. After ten years of separation, Souchi is finally reunited with Chii, suddenly informed she has been his arranged wife since adolescence. Yet what should be a joyous reunion becomes a state of confusion, for it seems the unique girl from his past, was not truly one of a kind after all. There are English reviews.

8. Hapikuri -Happy Christmas- はぴくり －HAPPY CHRISTMAS－ [060127] Giga Yuji was studying hard for the entrance exams for the university. One day his teacher asked him to coach his junior students in chorus club. As experiencing the difficulty in coaching people, a friendship between Yuji and his juniors is getting firm. Story is too short and ends without trying to fully express heroines personality. There's lack of psychological depiction. It's a typical moege with some comic focus. It feels like game is unfinished.

9. Harukoi Otome ~Otome no Sono de Gokigenyou~ 春恋＊乙女～乙女の園でごきげんよう。～ [060127] BaseSon 1 2 3 4 Harukoi Otome revolves around protagonist Akihito Hayasaka, a male high-school sophomore. The high school he attends St. Francesca Academy used to be an all-girls school, and still has a high percentage of female students. Akihito's younger sister (Umi Hayasaka) and his childhood friend (Yuika Serizawa) are also students there. Akihito meets many girls there, and becomes friends with them. There are English reviews.

10. Horizont [060127] Artel The Earth has suffered from terrible wars, and the United Nations' World Federation Government was formed as a result. 33 years later ULF (United LUNA Front) has emerged and declared inter-planetary war to UNWF. The Moon gains initiative and transfers battlefield to the Earth. In the meantime, there is a group of self-described pirates "E-Freeze" in the sea near Antarctica. They have technical skills comparable to "ULF" and ability to fight in any environment with their humanoid all-purpose weapon GrastX. Main character starts as a member of these pirates. It's mostly a game about main character battles than a scenario-oriented work. There's little explanation and little persuasion... just plot events piled. Since main character is in the center, it becomes his war against ULF while the whole UNWF becomes forgotten. Fighting is bland, with poor animation. There's hardly any mystery in the game.

11. Imitation Lover [060127] light 1 2 Game encompasses the lives of Kurusu Itsuki as the first protagonist, and his best friend, Kidou Naoya as the second protagonist. Itsuki is a bit of a loner, and a bit on the emo side at that (kind of gloomy, not well-spoken and with a bit of an inferiority complex); he's basically Shinji Ikari moved from Evangelion into a random ero game, with a new haircut and glasses. Despite this, he is best friends with Naoya, who happens to be one of the most popular guys in school (as in, girls contantly ask him out and proposition him for things, even older girls). Itsuki's life takes a rather interesting turn when one Ichinose Kyo approaches him. Kyo in this story is a girl with a bad reputation, though she doesn't seem to mind the negative attention. Either way, she asks Itsuki to help her cheat at some exams that are coming up. In return, Kyo offers her virginity. As simple (and pointless) as this may sound, this set up leads to an emotional rollercoaster for Itsuki, not to mention the two girls he can end up with and the third girl that can potentially ruin his life. Aside from Kyo, both Sonomura Madoka (Kyo's childhood friend) and Kirisawa Iori (Naoya's would-be girlfriend) have a ton of emotional baggage that the player will get to witness, regarless of who Itsuki goes after. There is an English review.

12. Kurenai Tsuki 紅月－くれないつき－ [060127] Studio Air Main character meets a red-eyed girl on a stormy night, and he is entrusted with a red wax stone that emits a sinister shine. But afterwards he forgets about this encounter. But soon on a stormy day out of season a mysterious beautiful girl  transfers to school. She does not confirm or deny being the same girl giving the shiny stone. At the same time abominable incidents and ominous events begin to occur one after another. And every time the incident happens, "Red Crimson" in the palm of protagonist starts to glow with evil red radiance... Scenario is short and mostly devoted to fighting and some H abuse in-between. Game is not voiced at all, and emits a low funds aura. It becomes the last work of this brand.

13. Miko x Mono みこ×もの [060127] Patisserie At summer vacations main character returns to his home town. He was abandoned at the shrine when he was young, so he returns to the Shinto priest family consisting of six people, or rather half-people partially dragon, snake or tengu. And relationship with these family members starts to change... There is just one human heroine, others are half-humans, but the half-human theme is not really realized fully. There's nothing much in the scenario department, it's all about heroines, each having 6-7 H scenes, plus there is harem route, so it's a borderline nukige.

14. Nami no Mani Mani ~Sazanami Shinryoujo~ 波の間に間に～さざなみ診療所～ [060127] In an isolated island at the south, the people there are excited because a new doctor is coming to the only clinic of the island. Shinohara Shuutarou - the protagonist - is the new doctor, but he is lazy, clumsy and perverted. He starts to live at the house of the old doctor of the clinic with him, his daughter the beautiful widow Yumiko and her daughter Mana. But one day the old doctor decides to go overseas, leaving Shuutarou in charge of the clinic, much to the annoyance of the only nurse of the clinic, Rie. This story is not uncommon, but compared to predecessors there is much more room for H development here, thus it's another borderline nukige. The story is so plain and mediocre that if becomes frustrating. There is a shortage of adult women as heroines, but there still heroines that can be to one's liking, and that can make the game totally worthy.

15. Salvatore! サルバとーれ！ [060127] Liar-soft Nagaoka Xiang is a member of the Hayakawa Academy cheer leading squad. Recognized for his outstanding cheering skills its said that he would certainly be the next leader. But when the offer came he turned it down because he was going to Europe on a student exchange program. One year later, Nagaoka is back but the cheerleader squad is in shambles. In order to convince the school to support the squad he starts gathering random members, regardless of their cheer leading experience. The SIM elements averted me from trying this Liar Soft game myself. They include rhythm game and suguroku. Scenario is weak, but tempo is good, and there is an abundance of crazy laughter. Basically it's a bakage with SIM elements and unresolved potential of heroines due to poor plot development.

16. School Panic! スクールぱにっく！ [060127] Tarte School council reintroduces strict rules of the past. Main character's childhood friend is subject to punishment, so protagonist starts protest campaign against these rules. Boys and girls live for 10 days and cooperate to overthrow the system. There's no fun in development, and all the girls fall for MC without any reason. There's not enough moe or good humor, so it's hard to find something in this game.

17. White x Red [060127] Tryset Main character belongs to an exorcist lineage. Incidents start to become more frequent in his home town, so he interrupts training and returns to help the town. His father insists that son must marry to become a full-fledged exorcist, so protagonist starts living with his possible bride candidates including childhood friend and sister-in-law. Sex serves as source of spirit power required for exorcism, so young people are officially allowed to to involve in different kinds of sex play. Half RPG, half training SIM is not in my interest sphere.

18. Yotsunoha よつのは [060127] Hiqo Soft 1 2 3 4 5 A quest in search of our school memories. At the end of summer break, our school closed down. On our last day together, we put our true feelings inside a time capsule, and promised to meet again in three years. The promised summer came. With it came things that did and did not change between us. The quest in search of our school memories has begun. What kind of smile will they have once we meet again? There are English reviews.

When they regained consciousness the world before their eyes was one they had never seen before. It was obvious that the town-scape before them wasn't the present day. They were being looked down upon by soldiers stationed at a towering palace. They knew nothing about this first place they arrived at, the city wrapped in rainbows Reikru. Then an old magician appeared and told them the reason they were led to this world. In order to save the future of this world, the 15 of them were summoned. Without a care for the importance of the mission they were chosen for, the noisy group packed up all their various sad and happy thoughts and set off on an adventure in their cart pulled by the holy wolf "Noah". On that journey they met a member of the sacred elf tripe "Noel". They were captured by bandits and met an ominous man who was maybe an enemy or maybe an ally "Geil". They also met a cult who dressed all in black robes. The group of 15 friends who were wrapped up in various incidents cheerfully weathered the storm.
