VN of the Month April 2004 - Realize

Realize is the biggest surprise and win of the month. I'd also call Uminomichi a masterpiece. And no, I hate Clannad too much to enroll it here.

1. Hanakyuu はなきゅ～ [040402] Megami 1 The main character is Toshiaki Uemura, a typical university student living alone in the big city. The story begins in Christmas night, when Toshiaki and his girlfriend Sumomo fulfill physically their love for the first time. Their future seems now firmly set, but the next morning, while Toshiaki and Sumomo are on the way to their university (in Japan, Christmas is not a holiday), an unknown woman, Mayumi, approaches Toshiaki with an unusual request: "Do you want to care for this flower seed?" 2. Purism×Egoist [040416] Zip Main character is a genius first-rate scientist on android life form who abandons all his fame and starts to work as a local computer engineer. He lives a quiet life. One day he creates female android Piz. Fun and naughty life gradually transforms his life into a positive one.  Moege

3. Tantei Jinguuji Saburou Series No.02: Yokohama-kou Renzoku Satsujin Jiken 探偵 神宮寺三郎 Series No.02 横浜港連続殺人事件 [040421] WorkJam 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 A mysterious man has been searching for his missing fiancée in Depono and has asked Detective Jake Hunter for help. As he investigates deeper he finds out that the case is much more sophisticated than it looks.  There are English reviews.

4. Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Kind of Blue 探偵 神宮寺三郎 KIND OF BLUE [040422] WorkJam 1 As the game begins, we learn that Yoko Misoni, Saburou's invaluable assistant, has left the firm. Even a tough guy like Jinguuji feels the pain and misses his former employee. Despite the pangs, Saburou trudges ahead with cases and detective work. The new scenario in Kind of Blue places the super sleuth on assignment against a crime boss and on the hunt for a missing singer from a local jazz bar. As usual, portly police detective Sanzo Kumano provides support and advice during the course of the game. There is an English review.

5. Aoiro Rinne 蒼色輪廻 [040423] Mu 1 2 "Time to declare this once and for all--humans are but a product of unintended pregnancies!" Meet Doura, Aoiro Rinne's downcast, suicidal protagonist with nothing else on his on mind besides masturbation. The game opens with a reading from his suicide note, providing a cold look into his bleak past, and filled with vitriolic attacks on life and society itself. "Put more bluntly: I'm a failure as a human." Doura finds himself at the top of a department store's roof, determined to end his miserable life when a girl suddenly calls out to him. Her name is Infinity, but Doura doesn't find this out until later. She sneers at him, encouraging him to get it over with so we can all move on with our lives. Doura hesitates, claiming he had no intention of killing himself. Infinity possesses the ability to read minds, though, and sees through his transparent lies. Some banter between the two follows and Infinity follows Doura back to his place. Thus describes the fateful meeting of our two main characters. "You're going to die, right? Better hurry it up, then." Doura does eventually die. A lot, at that. But, with every death, he becomes a better person, more sensitive to those around him and capable of realizing the many errors he's committed in his past. He also discovers the truth behind the mysterious Infinity and the many misfortunes that plague his life. The game employs a unique scenario that spans across two parallel worlds within a loop-like framework. The two of which are seamlessly connected, allowing for travel between them at nearly any time through the use of keys that are acquired as the scenario progresses. There is an English review that averts me from the idea of having a video review of this game.

6. Canvas 2 ~Akaneiro no Palette~ Canvas2～茜色のパレット～ [040423] F&C FC01 1 2 3 4 Canvas 2 focuses on the lives of some students and teachers at Nadeshiko Academy both at school and their private lives. The main character of the game is Kamikura Hiroki, who lives with his younger cousin Elis. Hiroki is an art teacher while also trying to take care of Elis. Shortly thereafter, his childhood friend Kiri starts working at the school, and he meets the sickly student Tomoko, the famous "songstress" student Sumire, and the new substitute board chairman Saya. With the art club president Mami pestering him to be more diligent and his student Kana ramping up her offensive, Hiroki now has to juggle the feelings of these girls and the demands of his work and private life. Game is localized and has English reviews.

7. Cardcaptor Sakura: Sakura Card Hen ~Sakura to Card to O-Tomodachi~ カードキャプターさくら＜さくらカード編＞ 〜さくらとカードとおともだち〜 [040423] MTO Game is based on the second half on the anime of the same title. Player is able to enjoy lively animated world as Sakura. There is a "Sakura gauge" system to help gather the cards. Game is plain horrible even compared to already bad anime.

8. Cynthia ~Sincerely to You~ シンシア ～Sincerely to You～ [040423] Sincere The protagonist used to be a military pilot. One day, he was ordered to intercept a enemy aircraft but finds a civilian plane instead. He reported back to base, but they shot it down anyways. The media got a hold of this, and basically the military placed the blame on the protagonist and forced him to resign. A few years later, a survivor to the plane crash incident was found. She is a girl named Cynthia who was raised in the jungle the past few years by the wolves. Hearing this, the protagonist attempts to save the girl who has lost her human instincts and memory. Cynthia is rather cute and charming as she regains human emotions with the help of a great seiyu. But advantages end here. Story is really boring in the middle, the number of CG is small. Don't expect a plot here - game evaluation fully depends on one heroine charm.

9. Maou no Musume-tachi 魔王の娘たち [040423] Studio e.go! Once upon a time, Maou Amon terrorized in the land.  He led his army to attack towns and villages, spread destruction and slaughter. Nothing was able to slow him down (except his concern for animals being caught in the battles) and the whole world was about to fall into his hands.  Then a knight stormed his castle and defeated many of his minions singlehandedly. Driven by boredom, Amon granted the knight Serenn an audience, who then demanded of him to stop. After some negotiations (and Maoupunching) Amon accepted her offer to go with her when she promised he wouldn't be bored that way. Abandoning his army (except for his right hand/lover Chilul), he moved in with Serenn near a small town. Shortly afterwards, Serenn introduced him to Jem, whose parents had died in one of Amon's raids, and Tinna, a half-demon orphan, who she had adopted, and "asked" him to raise them while she fulfilled her duties as a knight in the capital. And so Maou Amon's new life with his daughters begins... I'm not going to discuss a raising SIM

11. Realize リアライズ [040423] PlayM 1 One morning during the class, Matsuura Ryou saw a strange object flying in the sky. Orange body was falling in a strange dancing pattern, vaguely resembling movements of the life form. This was his first encounter with EGO which led to contact with mysterious girl - Shibaura Yae that completely changed Ryou's life and destiny. Looks like a classic chunige story. I'm reviewing it myself.

12. Uminomichi 海道 [040423] D.O. Female cousin Aoi transfers to main character's class. She hates islander life, but gets along with five protagonist's friends really well. Since then the seven people do everything together. Protagonist confesses to the girl of his interest and starts preparations for the cultural festival where the queen of the school is going to be selected. Game shines for its idyllic countryside atmosphere, friends chorus and otaku personality of protagonist contributing to the most of gags. Common route with all the friendship activity is the best, but individual routes lack lightness. The result is a small masterpiece.

13. Clannad [040428] Key 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 Okazaki Tomoya is a third year high school student at Hikarizaka Private High School, leading a life full of resentment. His mother passed away in a car accident when he was young, leading his father, Naoyuki, to resort to alcohol and gambling to cope. This resulted in constant fights between the two until Naoyuki dislocated Tomoya’s shoulder. Unable to play on his basketball team, Tomoya began to distance himself from other people. Ever since he has had a distant relationship with his father, naturally becoming a delinquent over time. While on a walk to school, Tomoya meets a strange girl named Furukawa Nagisa, questioning if she likes the school at all. He finds himself helping her, and as time goes by, Tomoya finds his life heading towards a new direction. Game is localized and has English reviews.

14. 3-days Marriage ~Hikarugenji no Koibito~ 3-days Marriage ～光源氏の恋人～ [040430] Nail 1 Sumeragi Kouichi is heir to a lineage historically known to produce prestigious statesmen. In spite of this, he has remained outside the political spectrum, enjoying life as a normal high school student. Yet destiny has other plans for Kouichi, and his world is drastically challenged when its revealed he is to marry the daughter of a wealthy businessman: a girl who also happens to be his best friend’s younger sister. Can Kouichi find true love in something devoid of freewill; or is this marriage of convenience doomed to fail? There is an English review.

Eventually, the incident also starts to involve the girls surrounding Kou. "Yeah, I'll protect you! I promise..." But in order to fulfill that promise and to regain peace in your hometown of Kichijoji, he must safely rescue the abducted girls by following the footsteps of the murderers by inspecting the murder scenes and tracking them down.  A storm starts to brew as things heat up in the darkness of the Neo-Urban City of Kichijoji. If you win the "dart shooting" confrontation with the murderers you can safely rescue the heroine, which begins the love scene, but if defeated, the heroine is raped and murdered by the perpetrators and the game is over. He is welcomed inside by the butler, Kishiwada, and meets the young master of the mansion, Yuuri, who rudely tells him to get out and refuses to speak with him. There are several other inhabitants of the mansion as well, who all seem friendly or at least tolerable, but Takashi is soon plagued by haunting dreams and visions of a fire and murder, and becomes caught in a tangled mystery of the mansion...
