VN of the Month May 2006 - Hidamari

May is a relatively quiet month with few titles. The VN of the month is Hidamari which I'm reviewing, but there are quite many masterpieces including KimiKiss , D.C. II ~Da Capo II~ , Kishin Hishou Demonbane and finally Scarlett .

1. Samurai 7 [060524] Design Factory Co., Ltd. Visual novel based on the Samurai 7 anime. As usual, cheap anime spin-off. Game only covers 16 anime episodes and skips on epic ending. Moreover, it becomes a stupid dating sim as each samurai is available for developing relations.

2. KimiKiss キミキス [060525] Enterbrain! 1 Kouichi Sanada's childhood friend Mao Mizusawa has returned after living in France for a couple of years. He is surprised to learn that, since her parents are remaining overseas for the time being, his mother has agreed to let Mao stay with them. Although he has always simply thought of her as a friend, he must now deal with his awakening feelings for her, as well as the feelings he has for his high school crush, Yumi Hoshino. Dating SIM, but so close to Amagami that it makes heart throb faster.

3. D.C. II ~Da Capo II~ D.C.II ～ダ・カーポII～ [060526] Circus 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Takes place approximately 50 years after the original D.C. ~Da Capo~ game. The story revolves around Sakurai Yoshiyuki and Otome & Yume, sibling granddaughters of the original D.C. ~Da Capo~ protagonists Jun'ichi and Nemu. There are English reviews.

4. Hidamari ひだまり [060526] AXL There is an old apartment, where nobody lives because there is a rumor that people who live there will be dogged by misfortune. The apartment is owned by Kouhei, a uni student whose parents passed away when he was a child. Kouhei has a special ability that he can talk to ghosts. By using this ability, he sometimes talks to his deceased parents so that he never feels lonely. One day, two students transfer to his class, Yuki and Akari. They are so pretty that every male student gets excited. However, Kouhei can see two ghosts behind them... I'm really excited about AXL works after so much praise from Clephas. Did not find reviews of their first work, all the more need to review it myself.

5. Hokenshitsu ~Magical Pure Lesson♪~ 保健室～マジカルピュアレッスン♪～ [060526] Bun Bun 1 After getting lost in the mountains during the summer break and being absent on the start of the new semester our hero suddenly gets chosen for the school health commission. At first he doesn't know why he was forced into this job but everything becomes clear when he meets with the new school doctor, Dr. Marina. Calling herself "Infirmary goddess" first thing she does is to decorate the school infirmary with ruffled lace and all kinds of girlish furniture. There are also rumors that she experiments on new drugs and tests them on the students, and because of that no one dares to come to the infirmary. Not being able to help it, he gradually becomes friends with her. His ordinary life changes dramatically shorty after... Heartwarming scenario without surprises and unique hero are most notable features of this work. Protagonist has dual personality - one is timid, the other one rough. In each scenario both personalities get attracted to a certain girl, and relations between these personalities take the majority of time - sometimes as friends, sometimes as rivals. Teacher herself is kind and supportive, so no more surprises, really, apart of protagonist personality.

6. Kishin Hishou Demonbane 機神飛翔デモンベイン [060526] Nitroplus 1 Kurou and Al, who crushed the conspiracy of Jashin with Demonbane, are working as detectives in a reborn world. However, there comes another shadow looming toward them. Many mysterious cases... by "Bloody Monsters". A fluid mass of blood destroys the whole town. Kurou and Al are busy with solving mysterious cases. At the same time, mysterious people appear in front of them, one is a girl in a red dress and another one is a boy named "Nitouryu". Who are they? Are they concerned with these mysterious cases? There is kind of English review, but gameplay elements are too dense to try it myself.

7. Mahou ga Sekai o Sukuimasu! 魔法が世界を救います！ [060526] Anastasia From the shadows "magicians" protect the order of the world. Several years ago in a place known to noone the protagonist (named Kreutz) has lost his powers in a battle where the stake has been the world itself. Now, according to his master's will, he arrived in town to protect his daughters. Due to unexpected events Kreutz ended up teaching magic to Flora, one of the daughters, to make her a full-fledged magician. Will Flora manage to become a magician? Is Kreutz able to cut his ties with his past? Can they thwart the plans of the evil "magician" who's just appeared? SIM

8. Nanairo Kanata - Natsuyasumi! Doki Love Vacances Yume Bouken! - 七彩かなた-夏休み！ドキラブバカンス夢冒険！- [060526] Chise Ryoichi is an ordinary uni student. During summer vacation, he comes to the amusement park "Hourai MAZE" with his friends. They come here for adventure! This "Hourai MAZE" used to be an amusement park but closed down due to strange phenomena and just ruins now. What they find is a huge meteorite flashing seven color lights. When they destroy this meteorite, an unexpected incident happens. "Time Travel". Where do they go? How do they come back? Ryoichi and his friends start a real adventure. We get to the Heian era, meet princess and seek cooperation in returning to modern time. Game is a comedy, and princess is especially funny as she learns new junk words and utilizes them wrongly, creating funny situations. After each route we return to the beginning of the loop... getting to final route takes a lot of time and patience. Story is pretty bad, but bright enough to keep on if you like this kind of games.

9. Scarlett Scarlett～スカーレット～ [060526] NekoNeko Soft 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Ohno Akito is a military otaku. Akito dropped out of school a year ago and is now camping on a small island off Okinawa, where he went in the forlorn hope that the American military presence would give him a chance to play with real guns. He's unexpectedly approached by a foreigner girl, Shizuka, who tells him he's in a restricted area. That night, Akito sees a B-2 stealth bomber flying overhead, and realizes something is happening that shouldn't be. The next day, as he's trying to break into Kadena Air Base to get a closer look at the B-2, he runs into Shizuka again... The story is told from 2 perspectives: Kurou, a super-spy from the prestigious Bettou-Izumi-Scarlett family, and Akito. The former wields knowledge, strength, and great political power, while the latter was just a normal high school guy. But their differing views on the world and how they themselves change is one of the main reasons that the story’s interesting. Scarlett is just a simple little story about 2 people, their different worlds, and the people they love. There are English reviews.
